The map will help scientists build an inventory of how much carbon the world’s forests store and how fast that carbon cycles through ecosystems and back into the atmosphere. While there are many local and regional canopy maps, this is the very first global map using a uniform method for measure.

The laser technology called LIDAR was used to capture the data. It is can capture vertical slices of surface features. It measured the forest canopy height by shooting a pulse of light at the ground and observed the time it took to return in comparison to the time recorded for the top of the forest canopy.
The map is based on data from over 250 million laser pulses collected during a seven-year period.

The new map shows the world’s tallest forests clustered in the Pacific Northwest of North America and portions of Southeast Asia, while shorter forests are found in broad swaths across northern Canada and Eurasia. The map depicts average height over 5 square kilometers (1.9 square miles) regions), not the maximum heights that any one tree or small patch of trees might attain.

Foto udara Skotlandia dan Eropa Barat masa Perang Dunia II dari tahun 1940-an sekarang dapat dilihat secara online. Tersedia juga foto udara masa tahun 50-an.

Dua koleksi besar bisa di akses di the National Library of Scotland’s collection of Ordnance Survey air photo mosaics of Scotland dan the National Collection of Aerial Photography, termasuk juga foto masa perang dari the Aerial Reconnaissance Archives.

Google Earth juga telah menambahkan image Perang Dunia II untuk kota-kota tertentu di Eropa. Image yang diambil pada tahun 1943 tersebut menggambarkan efek dari pemboman pada masa perang tersebut. Image tersedia sekitar 35 kota di Eropa. Image Kota Warsawa di Polandia bahkan tersedia untuk tahun 1935 dan 1945.

Sebuah aplikasi pemetaan untuk iPhone yang saya posting sebelumnya, sebenarnya bisa digunakan secara offline, namun terbatas untuk data California saja. Jika Anda membutuhkan aplikasi pemetaan yang bisa diakses secara offline di iPhone dan menyediakan berbagai peta kota dunia, maka aplikasi OffMaps sangat tepat untuk Anda. Dengan OffMaps pengguna iPhone atau iPod bisa mengakses peta secara offline, sehingga terhindar dari biaya akses dan tentu saja kecepatan akses pada peta itu sendiri.

OffMaps menggunakan peta dari OpenStreetMaps (OSM) dimana bukan hanya informasi jalan kota saja yang ada, namun juga tersedia point of intererst lainnya. Peta Jakarta di OSM saya lihat sudah sangat baik dan informatif.  Buat Anda yang bepergian ke luar negeri, Anda bisa memilih peta kota tujuan Anda untuk di download atau bisa juga membelinya. OffMaps  tidak hanya datang dengan peta yang preloaded saja, tapi Anda juga bisa mendownload peta lainnya tanpa tambahan biaya.

Selain mode peta offline, OffMaps juga memiliki mode peta online. Secara online user bisa menggunakan tools dasar aplikasi pemetaan, yaitu pan dan zoom (in / out). Selain itu tersedia juga tools pencarian dan add bookmark. Peta terakhir yang di akses itulah yang bisa di baca secara offline. Hampir mirip dengan Google Earth, OffMaps menyimpan cache akses terakhir terhadap peta. Akses secara offline hanya tersedia peta yang diakses terakhir tersebut. Bahkan menu pencarian pun tidak bisa Anda lakukan dalam kondisi offline.

Integrity Logic merilis aplikasi GIS yang pertama untuk iPhone yang diberi nama  Geology CA. Aplikasi ini memang hanya fokus pada pemetaan geologi di California, Amerika saja. Disebut sebagai aplikasi GIS karena fungsi GIS standar sudah dimiliki aplikasi yang menyediakan 19 layer (geology, earthquakes, faults, surveying, mines and quarries, etc) yang bisa saling overlay, di ubah urutan layernya, memiliki fungsi show/hidden layer, serta mengubah warna layer menjadi transparan.

Geology CA adalah aplikasi yang berdiri sendiri dan tidak membutuhkan akses internet, sehingga bisa digunakan di manapun. Aplikasi ini bisa selain bisa digunakan untuk iPhone juga bisa digunakan pada iPod yang sudah built-in GPS. Kemampuan lainnya adalah melakukan menampilkan peta resolusi tinggi hasil scan atau perekaman dari kamera.

Bio Mapping adalah sebuah komunitas pemetaan yang sudah berjalan selama 4 tahun dan memiliki lebih dari 1500 partisipan.  Mereka merekam pengguna Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), sebuah indikator sederhana untuk menunjukkan tingkat emosional seseorang yang dihubungkan dengan lokasi geografisnya.  Tentang Bio Mapping bisa dilihat selengkapnya di sini.

Terkait dengan Bio Mapping tersebut, tersedia sebuah ebook dengan judul Emotional Cartography: Technologies of the Self
yang berisi sekumpulan peta yang menunjukkan hubungan antara ruang dengan biometric data dan emosi. Essay ditulis oleh artists, psychogeographers, designers, cultural researchers, futurologists dan neuroscientists.

Seminggu yang lalu, di GIS Blog saya telah memposting tentang GIS Tutorial gratis untuk pemetaan kemanusiaan. Tutorial tersebut, membahas bagaimana memetakan daerah bencana yang didahului dengan melakukan collecting data menggunakan GPS, editing dan processing data memanfaatkan software GIS yang Open Source / Free, yaitu MapWindow dan Google Earth. Tutorial GIS yang dibuat oleh MapAction tersebut bukanlah satu-satunya yang memberi tuntunan untuk membuat peta untuk kemanusiaan.

Terdapat dua lagi tutorial pembuatan peta untuk advokasi dan kemanusian, sejauh info yang saya dapatkan saat ini. Yang pertama diterbitkan pada January 2008 dengan judul Visualizing Information for Advocacy: an Introduction to Information Design. Yang kedua adalah Maps for Advocacy: An Introduction to Geographic Mapping Techniques yang terbit pada September 2008. Keduanya diterbitkan oleh Tactical Technology Collective dan tersedia dalam format PDF yang bisa di download gratis, seperti halnya Field Guide for Humanitarian Mapping dari MapAction. Street View tersedia baik di Google Maps maupun di Google Earth. Posting kali ini ingin menunjukkan sebuah video cara menggunakan Street View di Google Earth. Walaupun di Indonesia belum tersedia layanan ini, tapi siapa tahu Anda tertarik untuk mencoba fasilitas ini dan bisa menemukan tampilan istimewa seperti gambar diatas atau mungkin mendapati penampakan UFO.
